And if it isn’t, you should definitely add it.

Lagos is one of the most beautiful destinations in southern Portugal. The town combines dramatic cliffs, some of the most stunning beaches in the Algarve, a unique atmosphere, and plenty of outdoor adventures.

But what exactly are the best things to do in Lagos Algarve?

After living here for more than 10 years, I can confidently say that Lagos is the perfect destination for anyone who loves nature, beaches, the ocean, and outdoor adventure.

In this guide, I’ll show you the best things to do in Lagos, including boat tours, incredible beaches, coastal hikes, and local experiences you really shouldn’t miss.

 1. Boat Tour to the Ponta da Piedade Caves

One of the best things to do in Lagos Algarve is without a doubt the boat tour to the Ponta da Piedade caves.

Ponta da Piedade is one of the most impressive natural landscapes in Portugal. The coastline is formed by golden cliffs, natural arches, and sea caves carved by the ocean over thousands of years.

The view from above is already beautiful, but seeing it from the sea is simply spectacular.

Most boat tours in Lagos depart from Lagos Marina and last around 60 to 75 minutes.

During the tour, the boat enters the caves and passes famous rock formations such as:

The Cathedral

Elephant Cave

Triumph Arch

Love Cave

There are several types of boat tours available:

small traditional boats

speedboats

catamarans

private tours

luxury boats

If you’re looking for something more affordable, the small boats departing from Dona Ana Beach can be a good option, although most companies operate from Lagos Marina.

However, if you’re looking for a truly unique experience, I recommend a private charter. Besides offering more comfort and exclusivity, private charters often explore other parts of the Algarve coast as well.

If you only have time to do one activity in Lagos, this is the one I always recommend.

 2. Spend the Day at the Best Beaches in Lagos

Another must-do activity in Lagos is simply spending a full day at the beach.

Lagos has some of the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and turquoise waters.

If you want to experience Lagos like a local, set aside a full day to explore some of these beaches.

The most famous ones include:

Praia do Camilo

One of the most photographed beaches in Lagos.

A long wooden staircase descends the cliffs to a small but stunning beach.

This is my favorite beach during the summer, but be prepared: after enjoying the beach, you’ll have to climb the stairs back up.

Also pay attention during high tide, as the beach can become quite small with limited space.

Praia Dona Ana

This is probably the most famous beach in Lagos.

It’s very popular with tourists thanks to its calm waters and beautiful rock formations in the sea.

There is also a beachfront restaurant and a few water activity options.

This is also where some of the oldest boat tours to the Ponta da Piedade caves depart from.

Meia Praia

A huge beach stretching for several kilometers.

Perfect for:

long walks

sports activities

relaxing by the sea

It’s also one of my personal favorites.

I usually prefer the eastern side of the beach, which tends to be quieter.

However, be aware that on very windy days the beach can become uncomfortable since it is quite exposed. If the wind is above 15 knots, it might not be the best option.

Praia da Batata

This is the closest beach to the historic center of Lagos.

Because of that, it’s usually very busy with tourists.

In reality, it’s a combination of three small beaches and coves, often with calm and protected waters.

It’s a great option if you want convenience and are staying near the old town.

Praia de Porto de Mós

This is often considered the locals’ beach.

It’s wider and more relaxed, with two beach restaurants and a perfect atmosphere for spending the entire day.

During the summer, sea temperatures usually reach 20-22°C (68-72°F), which is quite pleasant for swimming.

 3. Walk the Coastal Boardwalk to Ponta da Piedade

One of the most beautiful walks in the Algarve is the coastal route between Lagos and Ponta da Piedade.

In recent years, wooden boardwalks have been built along the cliffs, making the walk easier and providing incredible views of the coastline.

The most scenic section runs between:

Praia do Pinhão → Praia de Porto de Mós

If you prefer a shorter walk, start at Praia Dona Ana and continue to Ponta da Piedade.

During the walk you’ll see:

massive cliffs

hidden beaches

natural arches

incredible ocean views

Besides being a beautiful walk, it’s also a great way to get some exercise while exploring the coastline.

 5. Kayaking in the Lagos Sea Caves

If you enjoy adventure, kayaking in Lagos is an incredible experience.

Kayak tours allow you to explore the Ponta da Piedade caves much closer to nature.

With a kayak you can:

enter smaller caves

paddle through natural arches

reach hidden beaches

explore the coastline at your own pace

Most kayak tours depart from Lagos Marina and include a support boat that transports the kayaks to the cave area.

You can also start directly from Praia da Batata.

It’s one of the most popular adventure activities in Lagos.

 7. Walk the Fishermen’s Trail

For those who enjoy hiking, the Fishermen’s Trail is an excellent option.

This route is part of the famous Rota Vicentina, one of the most beautiful hiking trails in Portugal.

One section connects the city of Lagos to the village of Praia da Luz.

The full route is about 12 km (7.5 miles) long, following dramatic cliffs and coastal paths with spectacular views. However, the section I recommend most is between Porto de Mós Beach and Praia da Luz (around 3.5 km / 2.2 miles), or you can hike to the geodesic marker and back (around 6 km / 3.7 miles).

Start the walk at Porto de Mós Beach. When you arrive at the beach, look to your right side, where you’ll see a clearly marked trail next to the Campimar restaurant.

On clear days, you can see a large stretch of the Algarve coastline, and sometimes even areas near Sagres.

 8.
