Best Day Trips from Lagos

By a Local Guide

The Algarve is an incredible region full of magical places, dramatic cliffs, charming villages and some of the best beaches in Europe.

One of the great advantages of staying in Lagos is that many amazing destinations are less than an hour away. You can easily explore them during the day and still return to Lagos in time for dinner or a sunset walk along the marina.

After living in the Algarve for many years, these are some of my favorite day trips from Lagos.

1. Sagres

Aerial view of Farol do Cabo de Sao Vicente, a beautiful lighthouse on the cliff at sunset facing the ocean, Sagres, Algarve region, Portugal.

Sagres is one of the most historic and dramatic places in the Algarve.

Located at the southwestern tip of Portugal, this area was historically linked to the Age of Discoveries, when Prince Henry the Navigator helped launch Portugal’s maritime exploration.

Start your visit at the Sagres Fortress, where you can walk along the cliffs and enjoy incredible ocean views.

After that, spend some time at one of the nearby beaches. My favorites are:

  • Praia da Mareta – calm and accessible

  • Praia do Beliche – one of my personal favorites, surrounded by dramatic cliffs

If the weather is clear, you should absolutely stay for the sunset at Cabo de São Vicente. It’s considered one of the most famous sunsets in the Algarve.

📍 Distance from Lagos: 35 km (about 35 minutes)

2. Burgau

Burgau is a small fishing village located just west of Lagos.

Many people call it the “Santorini of Portugal” because of its white houses cascading down the hillside toward the sea.

The village is quiet, charming and perfect for a relaxed afternoon.

You can walk through the narrow streets, have lunch in one of the small restaurants and then spend some time at Praia do Burgau, a beautiful and protected beach surrounded by cliffs.

📍 Distance from Lagos: 10 km (about 15 minutes)

3. Arrifana

Arrifana+Portugal

Praia da Arrifana is one of the most impressive beaches on the west coast of the Algarve.

The scenery here is dramatic: a huge bay surrounded by steep cliffs and powerful Atlantic waves. It’s also a very popular place for surfing.

Even if you don’t surf, it’s worth visiting just for the views.

One place I always recommend is Ti Raul, a small restaurant/bar located high on the cliffs with an incredible view over the ocean.

It’s the perfect place to enjoy a drink while watching the sunset.

📍 Distance from Lagos: 50 km (about 50 minutes)

4. Ferragudo

Ferragudo is one of the most charming villages in the Algarve.

Located near Portimão, this traditional fishing village still maintains a very authentic atmosphere.

The village center is built around a small square with restaurants and cafés, making it a perfect place for lunch.

After exploring the village, I recommend visiting one of the nearby beaches like Praia da Angrinha or Praia Grande.

Both offer beautiful views across the river toward Portimão.

📍 Distance from Lagos: 30 km (about 30 minutes)

5. Praia da Luz

praiadaluz

Praia da Luz is a beautiful seaside village just a few minutes from Lagos.

It has a relaxed atmosphere and a lovely seafront promenade filled with cafés, restaurants and bars.

The beach is wide and perfect for swimming, and on the western side you’ll see the famous Rocha Negra, a large volcanic rock formation that dominates the landscape.

One of the best things to do here is simply sit at a beach bar and enjoy a drink while watching the ocean.

📍 Distance from Lagos: 8 km (about 10 minutes)

6. Albufeira

albufeira

Albufeira is one of the most famous tourist destinations in the Algarve.

The old town is built on a hill above the beach and is full of restaurants, shops and lively streets.

It’s a great place to walk around, explore the small alleys and have dinner in one of the many restaurants overlooking the sea.

For those who enjoy nightlife, Albufeira is also where the party happens. The city is famous for its bars and clubs that stay open late into the night.

📍 Distance from Lagos: 60 km (about 50 minutes)

7. Praia da Armona

ilha-da-armona

Praia da Armona is located on Ilha da Armona, part of the beautiful Ria Formosa Natural Park.

To get there, you first drive to the town of Olhão and then take a short ferry boat to the island.

Once you arrive, you’ll find long sandy beaches, crystal-clear water and a peaceful atmosphere far from the crowds.

The island also has several small restaurants and beach cafés, making it a perfect place to spend the entire day relaxing by the sea.

📍 Distance from Lagos: 90 km to Olhão + ferry (about 1h20 total)

Final Thoughts

The Algarve is much more than just Lagos.

Within a short drive you can discover historic towns, wild beaches, charming fishing villages and spectacular cliffs.

One of the best ways to experience the region is to take a few day trips and explore beyond the city.

And after a full day exploring the Algarve, returning to Lagos in the evening — perhaps for dinner or a sunset walk along the marina — is always a perfect ending.
